Geeking Out

Since it's been a while and I was looking for something to write about that wasn't just straight-up bitching, I'm going to talk about computers. If you don't like that topic, feel free to click away now.

For those that know me, I'm a computer geek from Hell. As of a couple of weeks ago, there was a Dell desktop (nice one belonging to Peggy), my "server", and five laptops floating around the house. We've downsized a bit since then and are working on doing more.

My laptop (HP DV6810US) was pretty nice. It was a dual core Athlon64 running at 2Ghz, 3GB RAM, 160GB HDD, LiteScribe DVD-everything and a 15" LCD. We sold that and I replaced it with this handy-dandy Acer Aspire One (AOA150 1.6Ghz Atom, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD on a 9" LCD) that I'm typing on.

I had an older Micron Transport GX2 with a 1Ghz PIII, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD on a 15" LCD. This little work horse just wasn't keeping up... It had problems with keeping power connected (a loose cable) and I just couldn't handleit any more. So, my sister graciously took it off my hands.

Peggy has a Toshiba laptop that I know nothing about other than it's kinda powerful and runs Windows Vista. She's planning on replacing that with her own Acer AOA150 (but hers is blue).

Finally there's the server. This thing has been my baby for six years now. It's a home built AMD Athlon 2600+ running at 2.2Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, a 128MB nVidia GeForce 5200, 2 500GB HDD's, 2 160GB HDD's, one 400GB HDD, and a 40GB HDD (for the OS). It's been my desktop, my web server, my media server, my gaming rig... it's taken a licking. And now it has to go...

It's being replaced by a Western Digital MyBook NAS (1TB) and a Western Digital USB external (1TB). Nice thing is that the NAS has a USB port and will serve up anythhing plugged into it over the network.

I'm hoping that we can finish this transition and get down to those three computers... would clear up a lot of space and would make my tech support job easier ;)

OK, I've geeked out enough. See you all later.
